The ambassadors of the world’s Portuguese language countries accredited in the People’s Republic of China will meet in Macau on February 1 and 2 for the 5th meeting of the Forum for Economic and Commercial Cooperation between China and the Portuguese-Speaking World.

The annual meeting is used to review the forum’s activities over the previous 12 months and discuss perspectives for the future. The highlight of this year’s event is the planning of the ministerial meeting, which takes place every three years. According to Macau’s Chief Executive Chui Sai On, the ministerial meeting will take place in May to coincide with the 2010 Shanghai Expo.

In the meeting, in which the organization’s new secretary general Chan Hexi will formally be sworn in to office, representatives of China and Macau will be present alongside the ambassadors of Portugal, Brazil, Angola, Mozambique, Cape Verde, Guinea Bissau and East Timor accredited in Beijing.

China established the Special Administrative Region of Macau as its platform for the reinforcement of economic and commercial cooperation with the Portuguese-speaking world in 2003, the year in which the forum was created.
