Cape Verde, in the person of Minister of Foreign Affairs Victor Borges has accepted negotiating a cooperation accord with the Spanish government for the repatriation of immigrants illegally entering Spain in exchange for training actions and job employment programs.

Victor Borges announced the Cape Verdean government’s willingness and desire to negotiate “a global accord on migratory flows” yesterday to his Spanish homologue, Miguel Angel Moratinos.

Cape Verde is the first African country to accept the proposal presented by Madrid to nearly thirty of the continent’s nations within the context of a meeting promoted by Spain and the United Nations and aimed at evaluating the progress and obstacles registered in the fight against terrorism in Africa.

The meeting is being used to discuss legislative and judicial aspects, but Madrid has also taken advantage of the occasion to deal with the issue of the illegal migration of Africans to Spanish territory.

For its part, the government of Mauritania, through its Minister of Foreign Affairs Ahmed Uld Sid’Ahmed, affirmed its willingness to hold a meeting next week of the bilateral mixed commission to discuss migration issues, among other things.

Of the 27 African countries participating in the meeting yesterday and today, four are part of the Community of Portuguese Language Countries: Angola, Cape Verde, Guinea Bissau and São Tomé and Príncipe.
