The World bank’s annual report points to a slight growth in business conditions in Cape Verde. The archipelago rose one slot on the Doing Business 2010 ranking, and now occupies 146th position on a list of 183 countries.

The ranking evaluates how easy it is to do business in each country on the list, taking into account the regulations applied to business in terms of loan availability, the hiring of employees, tax payments, the closing of firms, and other factors.

Cape Verde rose one spot on the list, from 147th to 146th place, with a considerable expansion in the creation of businesses (28 more than in 2009). Other positive points were given in the payment of taxes (with a +4 point classification), cross-border commerce (+2) and the fulfillment of contracts (+2). The country registered a significant drop, however, in access to credit (-19 slots), as well as the protection afforded investors (-5) and the ease of obtaining construction permits (-4).

The best aspect of the business climate in Cape Verde remains the fulfillment of contracts, which obtained 38th place on the general ranking of countries, and international commerce (58th).
