| Cape Verdean emigration and the fight for the countrys independence from Portugal are themes chosen by two Dutch researchers as the focus of their respective doctoral theses. In order to investigate and gather data, both traveled to the archipelago, where they carried out field work over the course of a week. The results of their work are also expected to be shown on one of the Netherlands television channels.
Sal, São Vicente, Santo Antão and Santiago are the islands that historian Maake Slingerland and anthropologist Judith Barendregt, both from Dutch university Erasmus, chose to carry out their investigations into Cape Verdean emigration and the fight for the nations independence. The two traveled to Cape Verde accompanied by Djunga di Biluca, one of the first Cape Verdeans to emigrate to the Netherlands, as well as a cameraman and the president of the Cape Verdean association Avante, to visit specific places and gather images. The two investigators also met with Cape Verdean President Pedro Pires, who was one of the leaders in the armed struggle for the independence of Cape Verde and Guinea Bissau from Portugal.  , According to Djunga di Biluca, the researchers were led to carry out their investigation because they believe that the Cape Verdean émigrés who live in the Netherlands have played an important role in the country. They also admire our culture, our way of living and the way we get along with one another.  , Erasmus University itself provided financial support for the investigation of the two scholars. |
