The director of Cape Verde’s Department of Health has confirmed the discovery of five new cases of infection by the H1N1 virus in the country, bringing the total to eight.
According to Jacqueline Pereira, director of the Department of Health, there are also four new suspected cases, samples of which have been sent to the Pasteur Institute laboratory in Senegalese capital Dakar for tests. According to Pereira, the five people infected were in contact with the three children who on June 22 were confirmed as the first cases of swine flu detected in Cape Verde. As the cases appeared to be concentrated in Santa Catarina on the island of Santiago, health authorities affirm that they will be especially vigilant in that municipality. Only one of the suspected cases comes from the municipality of Praia. The three sisters confirmed as the first cases of swine flu in Cape Verde are under quarantine, and all are in stable condition. According to Pereira, Cape Verde has a stock of antiviral medication allowing it to assist more than 1,000 patients infected with the H1N1 virus. |
