The Cape Verdean national soccer selection has had a busy week. On Wednesday, April 9, the International Soccer Federation issued its monthly ranking of national selections, with Cape Verde occupying the 107th position with 298 points - four slots better than its February classification.

Argentina held on to the leadership of the ranking with 1,519 points, followed by Brazil, with 1,509, Italy, with 1,391, Spain, with 1,319, and Germany, with 1,261. The highest-ranked African team is Ghana, which appears in 14th place.

On Monday of this week, the Cape Verdean Soccer Federation introduced the country to the new coach of the national soccer team, Portugals João de Deus, whose first challenge will be to try to get Cape Verde qualified for the African Cup of Nations, scheduled to take place in 2010 in Angola. Eliminatory tournaments, which will also count for the World Cup in South Africa, begin in June, and Cape Verde is in Group 1 alongside Cameroon, Tanzania and Mauritius.
