The Cape Verdean national soccer selection beat Tanzania Saturday, June 7, in a 1-0 game, and took an important step in the eliminatory rounds for the Angola Africa Cup of Nations and the South Africa World Cup. The hero of the match was Babanco, of Sporting da Praia, who scored the single goal 72 minutes into the game.

Even before the ball got rolling, the Cape Verdean players were confident in a win. "Were going to work for a win. Tanzania is going to play behind the line of the ball, so we have to be offensive in order to break through the blockade," said goalie Ernesto.

Team captain Lito stressed that the support of the crowd would be fundamental. "The fans have always supported us and, with their encouragement, we have all it takes to win."

After the game, Babanco was very moved and visibly happy. "I entered the game and scored the goal, fortunately. Now we have to prepare to face Mauritius." Coach João de Deus was also satisfied with the game played by his athletes. With his voice almost inaudible from so much use, he said "we can and will continue to grow. We want to develop soccer in Cape Verde and project it into the future."

The next test will be against Mauritius, on June 15 in Curepipe.
