A 19-year-old boy named Isaac died Tuesday, September 33, while playing a practice soccer game with colleagues in the Santa Filomena district of São Filipe, on the island of Fogo.

According to information provided to website fogo.cv by one of his companions, “about 15 minutes after the beginning of the game, the victim’s older brother asked Isaac to let him take over, as Isaac was showing signs of fatigue, but when he went to leave the field he fainted.”

According to the same eyewitness, before falling to the ground, Isaac placed his hands on his knees, but his colleagues did not have enough time to keep him from falling. Isaac was taken to the emergency room at São Filipe Regional Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival at 6:30 pm, according to Health Department delegation assistant physician Mário Sena.

The cause of the young man’s death has yet to be determined, but the local Health Department delegate believes that he could have had a heart attack.

Isaac, who was a volunteer at the São Filipe Youth Center, lived in the Santa Filomena neighborhood and liked to play guitar and sing. He had just finished high school, and within a matter of weeks was scheduled to travel to Portugal for a professional training course.
