The Portuguese Professional Soccer League has revealed the number of foreign athletes playing for the 174 soccer teams participating in national championships in the country on its web site. According to the information, 19% of all soccer players holding contracts with Portuguese teams are from other countries.
All told, 774 foreign athletes of 53 different nationalities play for Portuguese soccer teams. In percentage terms, the greatest concentration of foreign players is seen in the main league (47.2%). The Portuguese Professional Soccer League states that 20 African countries are represented on Portuguese teams, as opposed to 19 European countries, 10 from the Americas, three from Asia and one from the Pacific. 70% of the foreign players hail from Portuguese-speaking countries. Brazil is the Portuguese-speaking country that has the largest number of athletes playing on Portuguese soccer teams (374), followed by Cape Verde (64) and Guinea Bissau (58). |
