Cape Verdean fans of Portuguese soccer team Benfica celebrated the team’s victory in the Portuguese national soccer championship yesterday. Children and adults, men and women all noisily expressed their satisfaction with the conquest. It was 5:55 pm in Praia when the referee blew the whistle ending the game against Rio Ave, and Benfica fans immediately flowed into the streets to celebrate the team’s 32nd championship title a continent away. The main streets of Praia became jammed with honking cars, and the deafening roar of the celebrations overpowered everything else. The scenario was identical on the island of São Vicente, where drum groups took to the streets to celebrate the win as well. Praça Nova square and other gathering spots filled with people commemorating Benfica’s victory in the national championship of Cape Verde’s former colonial power, Portugal. |
