| Cape Verdean athlete Gelson Fernandes is one of the 23 players chosen by Swiss national soccer team coach Ottmar Hitzfeld to represent the country in the world Cup in South Africa.
A lineup featuring four “foreigners” will represent Switzerland in the upcoming World Cup. The country, traditionally a destination for large numbers of immigrants, announced the names of the 23 athletes, including seven reserve players, drafted for the world soccer championship in South Africa.
In a nation in which 20% of the 7.7 million inhabitants are foreign-born, it is only natural for the proportion to be the same in the world of soccer. As such, Gelson Fernandes (Cape Verde) will join Kosovo’s Xherdan Shaqiri and Valon Behrami and Congolese Blaise Nkufo on the country’s national team. |
